On May 16, 2007 the Provincial Government’s Special Committee on Sustainable Aquaculture released their recommendations for fish farming on the BC coast. While Raincoast believes the farming of carnivores (ie salmon) will never be sustainable (hence closed-containment is not a long term solution), we do support the committee’s recommendations to mitigate the immediate impacts of BC fish farms.
The Liberal government needs to hear from you, as some representatives are already dismissing the 18 month’s of work by this committee. Tell the Liberals to implement the recommendations of their Special Committee on Sustainable Aquaculture, specifically their recommendations for:
- No new approvals for fish farms sites
- Immediate measures of fallowing farms be put in place in the interim
- No increase in production or size of any existing farms
- accountability and transparency from fish farm companies
